‘Tomana Charged Over Various Decisions He Made Ever Since His Appointment As Prosecutor General’- Senior Assistant Com Charamba .

Police national spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said the charges arose from various decisions he made as PG since his appointment.

These included the decision to drop charges against senior Zupco officials in 2008, among them then chief executive officer Bright Matonga and former board chair Charles Nherera.

“I confirm that he has been arrested for abuse of office as a public officer, or alternatively, defeating the course of justice. This emanates from various decisions and instructions that he would have given to the principal law officers, among other things,” Charamba said.

“There are so many cases where he gave instructions to the principal law officer, either to decline to prosecute, or take a certain direction, for example, when he instructed that the State drops charges against Bright Matonga.

In summary, it is abuse of office as a public official or obstruction of justice.”

The arrest came a day after President Robert Mugabe appointed a tribunal to investigate Tomana’s conduct as a public officer.

Mugabe on Thursday suspended Tomana and appointed a three-member tribunal led by retired High Court judge Justice Moses Chinhengo to investigate his fitness to continue in office amid allegations of corruption levelled against him.

Advocate Ray Goba was appointed acting PG until the tribunal completes its investigation.

The Chinhengo tribunal has been tasked to investigate Tomana on charges of defying court orders and criminal abuse of office when he withdrew sabotage charges against two military officers who were allegedly caught in a foiled attempt to bomb Mugabe’s Gushungo Dairy plant in Mazowe in January this year.
